Confidential Communication From: Chiku Kinuthia, Department of Occult Research, Leonis Base To: Concordia Bly, Junior Special Agent, Tal Sharnis Bureau Subject: Your Investigation Hey Cordy, I’ll have my official report for you tomorrow, to share with the higher-ups, but I’ve been working all evening on my analysis of all the material you sent and right now I’m just too tired to write in “Official Report Voice.” But never too tired to write a quick letter to my bestie and say... Holy Shit, girl. You were right, you’ve stumbled onto something big here. Well, okay, not fair to say “stumbled,” because it looks like you’ve been seriously rocking the field agent thing, doing some clever investigating. I knew you’d be good at the fieldwork if they gave you a chance, and look at you now! So, yeah, Holy Shit. Your guess was right on the nose about this web of binding spells being all part of one giant ultra-complex magickal sigil. That’s exactly what it is. Full details coming up in my finish-it-tomorrow official report, which will be dazzling in its officialness. But I hate to keep you waiting, so here are the highlights you need to know about right away: 1) Good news, it looks like the giant sigil is still a work-in-progress. I estimate it’s maybe 85% finished – which sounds pretty close to finished, I know, but see the next item... 2) Whoever is doing this has been working at it for a long time. This isn’t a fast project, which is part of why they’ve been able to be so stealthy about it. That’s sort of good news, because it means that the final 15% of the work on it isn’t going to be completed tomorrow or next month or even this year. You caught this thing in time. 3) But how long they’ve been working at it is also kind of freaky. Because we’re talking like 90 years. In a city that’s only been in its current location for 114 years. A lot of the sigil, all the core groundwork for it, is built into the structure and layout of the city at this point. Like when the populace of the city started getting it together to rebuild after the chaos of the Great Merger and start laying down new infrastructure, the basic groundwork for the sigil was built into it all from the start. So this project is a conspiracy that dates back to the early days of Tal Sharnis, and you’re dealing with something like a secret society or someone with a more-that-human lifespan. 5) This is what you’ve been waiting for: what is it all for? That’s the biggest news of all. It looks like when this sigil is complete, it will form the groundwork for a ritual that will enable someone to take control over the nature of reality in the city, so thoroughly that they might even be able to control all the interdimensional portal activity. Basically, someone is setting Tal Sharnis up to become its own reality separate from the Plateau of Leng, and setting themselves up as pretty much the local god. Yikes. Yeah, this is a pretty big deal here. 6) Just finishing the sigil wouldn’t be enough to pull off something like this. All the ortgeists and other spirits bound into the sigil are powering the sigil itself, but that still doesn’t generate enough power to pull off something as big as the final ritual that this is building toward. That would take something major – something on the level of the Corvus Drive or one of the Seven Orbs or a giant ritual sacrifice of some kind. And you can bet whoever is doing this already has a plan for how they’re going to generate that power. 7) Like I said, the work on the sigil isn’t even finished yet. But it does look like it’s been speeding up. The files I’ll send tomorrow include a look at which parts are older and which are more recent, and at what parts of the city the last 15% of the sigil will need to expand into. Cordy, you have GOT to keep me posted on this investigation! I want to hear everything about it! Seriously, this is the coolest case I’ve ever been consulted on. Also, in case it wasn’t obvious: if this ritual is completed, the Tal Sharnis Bureau of the Reality Patrol is totally screwed. So get out there and put a stop to it, Miss Heroic Field Agent. And please, be careful. XOXOXO Chiku
Well, that’s not good.
See you next Wednesday,
